Reflection #1

Having the first class today was so fun and exciting! We’ve been hearing about the trip to China since the moment all of us got into T&M and it’s so cool that it’s starting to become real. We started class with some brief introductions where everyone shared what they were excited about and nervous for. I talked about how I can sleep anywhere. It’s true- I’ve fallen asleep in cars, on planes, at a desk, sitting upright in bed, when I get tired, all bets are off! I also talked about how I’m nervous about getting lost. I genuinely have no sense of direction. I’m the person that took all of first semester on campus learning my way to the quad. I can’t navigate to where I’ve parked my car, I don’t know my way around the mall in my hometown without a map (in my defense it’s one of the biggest malls in America), and I struggle to find places in strange new cities. I’m hoping that there are a few students who are better at paying attention to surroundings and navigating that can help me out. I’ve always considered myself a fairly experienced traveler. I was born in England and have been to a lot of Europe, and after moving to the U.S. have lived on the East coast, in the South, and (obviously) in the Midwest. Hearing about other people’s experiences, mainly in Asia, made me realize that I’m definitely not as experienced as I thought I was. I haven’t been outside of North America and Europe so visiting China is a little outside of my comfort zone. It’s awesome to hear how many of my classmates do have that experience though and I’m excited to hopefully learn from their expertise.

I can’t wait for the other sessions and I’m so excited to receive our itinerary and learn a little bit more about the Chinese culture!
