At the beginning of class, a representative from the University of Illinois came in to present about safety and expectations for our trip. It’s extremely important to be aware of safety measures, but it does also make me nervous hearing about all of the potential risks and issues that have arisen in the past. Knowing these things though makes me certain I will be more careful late at night or more self-aware to make sure I don’t injure myself. I think it’s important to verify what the insurance we are given covers vs. what it doesn’t cover, like adventure excursions.
This session was a day full of class presentations. I was so impressed with how diligently my roommates had prepared and researched to inform us about their topics. One presentation that I specifically enjoyed was learning about Pop Culture in China. Hearing from Jun, who is from China, was especially interesting because he truly knows what students and individuals our age are into right now, current trends, and I think he will be a big asset next year. I thought the rap video was funny and it’s interesting to see how rap has gotten much bigger in China. Another presentation I really enjoyed was the group who presented on culture and gender. It was disappointing to hear the gender gaps that still exist in China, but it was relieving to hear how they have truly made strides to prevent these and also ended the 2-child rule.
