In general, I prepared this week by taking a look at the most basic level of what I might expect in traveling to China. In general I hope to see the sights and appreciate China up close while appreciating its rich history and culture. I know about sights like the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, but am I less familiar with other facets of the country’s sights, which I have begun to explore. I am also hoping for a fun experience with my peers on the trip, where I can take home memories of the time spent abroad.
In terms of fears I have a couple of them. For one, I personally am not the biggest fan of Chinese food as I have encountered it so far. Certainly yes there is a difference between “Americanized” Chinese food and the authentic cuisine, but as a vegetarian, I have some serious doubts about how much I will actually enjoy the trip from a culinary perspective, which I have generally heard as a stronger point of interest for those that eat meat. Another fear is that I am not sure how well I will deal with the general tiredness I can expect from the constant activity and travel on the trip. I know I will be leaving a hectic finals week and the celebration of various graduating friends directly to China. However, I have generally endured tiredness in the past, and don’t see this being a huge issue of any kind. Since I am more of a night owl here, I think jetlag may in fact improve my sleep regimen while aboard.
Altogether I have not begun significant preparation yet, but hope to in the coming weeks, and am excited for the oppportunity.
