This week during class, Beth brought us our passports as scans so that we could complete our study abroad applications. We went over the other requirements for the trip, especially the importance of the next class, the safety training. We got some slight updates to the itinerary with more details on companies we will visit. After those brief announcements, we went into the volunteer committee presentations.
Some of the larger takeaway for me were from the food group and pop culture. The food group highlighted the safety concerns, differences between “American Chinese” and authentic, snack foods, famous dishes in each city, and common fast food stores. Water contamination is something I have to pay attention to. I don’t normally think about water safety. I want to experience authentic foods in China, so I hope to take some of the tips and expand my pallet out East. I don’t intend to revert to fast food or common chains. For the pop culture group, I was interested in what popular music is like in China and what people our age do for fun. I was surprised to hear about karaoke bars, but I will definitely make it a point to go to one while in Shanghai or Beijing. I’m definitely going to have to give music in China time to grow on me, I doubt I’ll like it right off the bat. For the rest of the week, I focused on finishing the study abroad safety training to be ready for the next class.
