In today’s class, we discussed how to stay safe while studying abroad. I generally feel comfortable knowing that we are in a large group at all times, but I still feel nervous every once in a while because I will be experiencing a foreign country and culture for the first time. To do additional research, I looked up extra safety precautions for China just in case and so I can be prepared. One thing I noted is that petty crime is a threat to tourists because many of us will stick out like sore thumbs in China. Many website advertised to be careful at night and don’t carry too much cash. To take extra precautions, I also got an RFID protection sleeve to make sure my money is safe. Like in Europe, pickpockets are common in crowded areas. I specifically own a backpack that has anti-pickpocket locks on the zippers that I plan on wearing. I also found a separate article about safety tips for women traveling in China, which I was especially interested in. One article said to avoid black cabs, which are not official taxis and are very likely to scam women and foreigners. Overall, however, it said that China is generally a very safe place for women which is a relief. I am planning on stay vigilant and not let my guard down, but also be prepared to have fun! I also already downloaded DiDi, so I do not have to worry about using regular taxis. I am presenting on DiDi for my research company, so I am looking forward to hearing more about their service and why it has become so popular in China. I have also downloaded WeChat and installed a VPN so I can stay in contact with people in China in case something goes wrong.
